NYT theme clue: "Double, double toil and trouble" · Edited by Tracy Bennett

Today's Strands board is the witches' scene from Macbeth, two days before Halloween: eight theme words for what goes into the brew and what the pot does - fire and bubble are named in the chant itself - plus the spangram, the big iron vessel it all boils in.

Hints, in order

Hint 0 of 3

Hint 1 of 3

The clue is a direct quote: Shakespeare's witches, chanting over their brew. Think spells, Halloween and a pot on the fire.

Hint 2 of 3

Every theme word belongs to the brew: the fire under the pot and the bubbling on top, plus the creatures and parts that go in - a lizard, a newt, a snake, a worm, blood and a tongue.

Hint 3 of 3 - Spangram

One eight-letter word runs edge to edge and names the big iron pot the witches stir. It starts with C and ends with N.

Spangram and theme words

The spangram first, then all eight theme words.
